weekend insights

16-18 January 2026

Thrillers dominated this weekend in both the UK and the US, with audience data revealing contrasting appeal across titles.

28 Years Later Part 2: The Bone Temple surged to the top spot in the UK, edging out The Housemaid with 24% and 20% of audiences respectively. In the US, 28 Years Later Part 2: The Bone Temple also led the weekend with 15% of audiences, ahead of Avatar: Fire and Ash, with The Housemaid rising into third place.

While thrillers claimed two of the top three positions in both markets, the demographic profiles diverged sharply. 28 Years Later Part 2: The Bone Temple skewed heavily male in both territories (68% male), with more than half of its audience aged 25–44, highlighting strong appeal among mid‑age genre fans.

The Housemaid by contrast, attracted a predominantly female audience (65%+ in both markets). In the UK, nearly half of its audience were aged 12–24, while in the US the audience spread more broadly, with 70% aged 12–44.

Same genre, same weekend, but two different audience profiles. It’s a clear reminder that thrillers don't have a single audience, and that positioning and tone matter as much as category.
